TANF Benefits October 2026: Payment Dates, State Rules and 2026 Updates

There is no single nationwide TANF payment date for October 2026. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is funded by the federal government but administered by states, territories, Washington, D.C. and tribal governments.

Each program sets its own payment schedule, eligibility rules and processing procedures. Your exact date may appear in your approval notice, benefits portal or EBT account.

2026 TANF funding update

Congress extended federal TANF funding through December 31, 2026, under the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2026.

This keeps the federal block grant operating through the end of the calendar year, but it does not create:

• One national TANF payment date.

• One nationwide benefit amount.

• Identical income limits.

• Uniform work requirements.

• The same lifetime time limit in every state.

TANF programs remain state-administered within federal requirements.
 

Federal TANF work-rule updates

The Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 changed how states receive credit for TANF work-participation requirements.

Beginning in Fiscal Year 2026:

• The caseload-reduction credit uses 2015 as the base year instead of 2005.

• States generally cannot count certain families receiving less than $35 per month through separate state programs toward work-participation calculations.

• States must report more information about employment outcomes.

• HHS may test alternative performance measures in up to five states.

These changes affect state administration and reporting. They do not automatically mean that every TANF recipient must work more hours or will lose benefits.
 

TANF time limits vary by state

Federal law generally limits the use of federal TANF funds for adults or minor heads of household who have received assistance for more than 60 months. Exceptions may apply for hardship, disability, domestic violence or other circumstances.

States may also provide state-funded assistance or use different time-limit policies. Examples include:

State updates effective in 2026

States may make their own changes during 2026.

For example:

• Texas: Maximum TANF grant amounts are scheduled to change beginning October 1, 2026 under a state-law formula linked to the federal poverty level.

• Michigan: The state lists a TANF plan effective January 1, 2026. 

• Washington, D.C.: Separate changes to time limits and work sanctions are scheduled for October 1, 2027—not October 2026.
